一般社団法人E-Yoronは与論島の自然環境を保全し、住民も野生生物も住みやすい持続可能なまちづくりを目指しています。そのために海のごみ拾いの習慣化や野生動植物の保全活動及び啓蒙活動を行っています。
与論島には海ごみが年間約40ｔ漂着し、回収には年間約 500 万円の処分費用がかかります。処分費用は国の漂着物対策基金だけでは賄えない部分は自治体が負担をし、財政を圧迫している状況です。
近年、海洋ごみに関する報道も多く、野生生物への悪影響に対する認識も拡がっていますが、そもそも与論島やサンゴ礁域にはどのような動植物が暮らしているのかについて、地域住民の方々の理解が及んでいない現状があります。
このような環境汚染問題や、島で生きる動植物について地域住民の方々に知ってもらい、環境保全意識のさらなる向上が求められています。
今回助成金を活用して作成した「与論島生きものハンドブック2025」では、与論島で見られる哺乳類、鳥類、両生類、爬虫類、昆虫がそれぞれ写真付きで紹介されています。
与論島にすむ生きものがどこで見られるかだけでなく、人の手によって運ばれてきた生きものたちがもたらす影響や特定外来生物についても知ることができます。
さらに、冊子には「私たちにできること」というコーナーがあり、生態系を守るため、植樹や、ビオトープ、野草を刈り残す部分を作るなど家庭でできる活動について記載されています。

「与論島の魅力は海。」島民も観光客も（大人もこどもも）多くの方々がそう答えます。
確かに、この島の美しい海は私たち島民にとって魅力的な環境ですが、この陸域にも多様な生きものたちが暮らしています。哺乳類や鳥類、爬虫類や両生類、そして昆虫たち…。
あまり知られてはいませんが、私たち同様、この与論島の地で日々暮らしています。
そうした生きものたちの存在を少しだけ身近に感じる、そして彼らと共生する上で大切なことを考えてみる…この冊子がそうした一助となれば幸いです。

一般社団法人E-Yoronは継続的な海岸美化を目指すため、海岸を訪れた人が自主的に海ごみを拾い、入れるための「拾い箱」を2017年から設置しています。
当財団の助成金は、この「拾い箱」の改修費用にも活用されています。
